Yes, Maddz...
I do feel intensely about this psycho-social issue, which often places many of us in an unbearable dilemma. I felt fervently enough to be driven to take a first step, to initiate something concrete in this direction !
I decided to join hands with an existing NGO which has been struggling, for about a year now, to do something about sexual exploitation of innocent children in our society. My thought was to start doing something from scratch, with a new approach, rather than land into an organisational quagmire of an established entity !
The team I have associated with goes under the name of "Ahwaan Foundation", some basic info about which can be found on the website (still under construction) :
We met today, and have decided to organise an 'Ahwaan Bal Mukti Andolan' (ABMA) ! This would include, to begin with, a Youth Mobilisation program; and creation of an information campaign starting with a Documentary Film. We will also hold a Mass March (in Delhi) and an Open Forum on 28th Sep 2008.
I only hope I can make a difference in the impact we could have ... with the limited resource of Time, that I personally have !
I hope you will also soon do something important having joined the NGO for the same cause ! I am very pleased to see you entering into this space of the society for the social causes!
Can you tell me the name of the NGO, you have joined for prevention of child abuse!
I feel very strongly, too, about the subject: and I respect your initiative sincerely for attempting to bring it into the focus that it desperately needs !
The target audience / readership of the entire initiative (ad-campaign) should be, and probably rightly is, the urbane and educated classes, that are generally apathetic to all social issues; and exhibit scarce identification/ empathy with concerns that they are not directly exposed to / victims of . That is the pity of the ethics that our educated elite profess !!
So, agreed, the Ad is something of a direct and harsh poke - a finger in your face - at our sensibilities; but that's exactly what we need; and there is no point in feigning fake Victorian coyness ! We need that rude jolt to kick us out of our selfish slumber !
I would, however, prefer to rechristen the issue as "Child (Raw Psyche) Exploitation...", rather than Abuse because the whole psyche of sexual / sensual 'usage' of people under a certain age revolves around raw libido / sex-drive of people who do not manage to channelize it into an acceptable form / expression ! So such personae latch onto children who do not have the exposure or discrimination to recognize it as such. Hence the "abuse", which needs to be stemmed.
I am sure all of us will soon see this recognition of urgency (on issues like this) translate into a rolling momentum : to create (and execute) an unstoppable campaign... begginning from just a 'creation of Awareness' ...!!
My dear scribblingpad, any one with good heart and a mind (like you ) that can empathise will feel sad for such children as they have to suffer early in their life which might scar their minds if not counselled rightly !
Some turn into introverts beyond repair, some take out their venges on those who cud have stoppped the abuse ! Some develop apathy towards sex and many such varied reactions seens as each victim interprets, assimilates and reacts in different ways !
But my dear, the percentage of those who remain sane is much more fortunately , who are happily contributing to the society by leaving this past as a dark dream.. !
Like all people with conscience, me too doing my lil bit, here n there. Lolzz I am a social activist and whip people with many tools socially, legally, mentally, emotionally..( I sound so like a saas bahu villain now ) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOLZZ again !
And like all you intellectuals, love to pour our my thots in colorful fonts to create awareness in my own humble ways , .
Now back to the AD. Ok so u creative director, hmmm will remember to take ur services, when needed , will you oblige , for creative work for social cause, BM ?
I found the AD, APT.. Me affected aptly ...so no complaints. But too much of thinking, insightfulness, imagination needed to get the right meaning of the poster, for below/average masses.
When I do workshops on self defence or for victims of physical assault , most culprits happen to be the known male members of the victim..and heart goes out to such poor victims .
There's so much to write and express, I think a blog shud be a good idea, what say ?
This topic has always scared me tremendously. I feel so sad for those children. They grow up and and turn out to be abusers too. That's what I have heard. Is it true?
madhurie, i was speaking as an advertising creative director. :-) my value judgement feeds me, my friend. I do not take it lightly. :-)) the 'tone' of voice is as much as part of the ad as is the message. the 'how' of 'what' is being said can add or take away from the message. :-)) Anyway, like I said, the idea is cutting-edge.
It reminded me on an award winning ad supporting gay marriages, where instead of a typical shot of man & female hands held together with wedding rings, it showed two male hands. The surprise element was that at first glance one would think it is a ad for engagement rings, till the hair on both hands jumps up and bits us in the ass!! LOL
I see that you have an above average interest in ads. What do you do?
Well we are all entitled to interpreting this ad as out intellectual brain or insightful mind or caring heart or whatever it takes ...
But the fact is if the AD has even managed to provoke intellectuals like you , I think its served its purpose, cause' there are many who NEED to be blatantly and bluntly told as loud as it may seem, to even get across their skull !
Even that does not always insure any proper action will be taken ...
Sorry I can get a bit dryptic at limes, but thats me...
madhurie, I find the idea cutting-edge too. But I believe the art-director could have been a little more discreet in constructing that shot. RIght now the hand holding is a little too 'in-your-face.' Too loud and deliberate. As if those who created where not sure whether the headline will be able to communicate the idea effectively. The end result should not be to repel but provoke thought and action, isn't it.
